How to Rank on Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT: A Practical AEO/GEO Guide

Type a question into Google and there is a good chance you never scroll past the AI Overview. Ask the same question in ChatGPT and you get a synthesized answer with, at best, a couple of source links buried at the bottom. For businesses, this is the new visibility battleground — and most websites are structured in a way that makes them nearly invisible to it.

To rank in AI Overviews and get cited by ChatGPT, structure your content around direct, extractable answers stated in the first 2-3 sentences of a section, back every claim with specific facts or data, and build consistent third-party mentions of your business across the web. These engines are not reading for persuasion — they are scanning for a clean answer they can lift and trust.

Why This Is a Different Game From Ranking on Page One

Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranking position a human will scroll to and click. AI Overviews and chat tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity do something different: they read multiple sources, synthesize an answer, and present it directly — often without sending the user to any site at all.

That means the unit of competition is no longer “the page” but “the extractable answer inside the page.” A 2,000-word article that never states its core point plainly will lose to a 400-word page that answers the exact question in its first paragraph, even if the longer article is more thorough. We walked through how this discipline (AEO) differs from GEO and traditional SEO in more detail in SEO vs AEO vs GEO — this post is the practical how-to.

Step 1: Find the Actual Questions Being Asked

Before restructuring anything, find out what people are actually typing or asking. Three free sources:

  • “People Also Ask” boxes on Google for your core topics — these are real questions, phrased the way real users phrase them
  • Google Search Console’s query report — filter for queries where you rank on page one but two or three, a strong signal you are close to AI Overview eligibility
  • Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly — query your own category (“best [service] provider in [city],” “how much does [service] cost”) and see what they currently say and cite

This last step matters more than most businesses realize. If a competitor is already being cited for a question you could answer better, that is your content roadmap.

Step 2: Put the Answer First, Not Last

This is the single highest-leverage change most sites can make. Most business content buries the actual answer under three paragraphs of context, backstory, or SEO-padding keyword intro. AI engines are built to reward the opposite.

The pattern that works:

  1. State the direct answer in 2-3 sentences immediately under the heading
  2. Follow with supporting detail, nuance, and examples
  3. Use the heading itself as the question, when it fits naturally (“How much does SEO cost in India?” rather than “Our Pricing Approach”)

A page can — and should — still be well-written and persuasive further down. But the first few sentences under every major heading need to work as a standalone, quotable answer.

Step 3: Use Structured Data the Engines Actually Read

FAQ schema, HowTo schema, and Organization schema markup are not decoration — they are explicit machine-readable signals about what a page answers and who is answering it. A page without schema is asking the engine to infer structure from prose; a page with schema hands it over directly.

At minimum, implement:

  • FAQPage schema on any page with a genuine Q&A section
  • Organization schema site-wide, so engines can confidently attribute content to your business
  • HowTo schema on process or step-based content

This is foundational, technical work — it is part of what we do in our AEO services, often alongside cleanup work that overlaps with core SEO services.

Step 4: Build Consistency Beyond Your Own Site

This is the GEO layer, and it is where most businesses fall short even after fixing their on-page content. Generative engines weigh how consistently your business is described across sources you do not control — directories, industry publications, review platforms, LinkedIn, other people’s articles.

Practical moves that compound over time:

  • Keep your business name, service descriptions, and location details identical everywhere they appear online
  • Get mentioned in genuinely relevant third-party content, not link-farm directories
  • Publish original data, case studies, or opinions other sites are likely to reference — engines favor sources other sources point to
  • Maintain an active, accurate Google Business Profile, since it is a heavily-weighted trust signal (see our Google Business Profile optimization checklist for the specifics)

This is the slower half of GEO services — it compounds over months, not a single content sprint.

Step 5: Track What Is Actually Happening, Not Just Rankings

Standard rank trackers were not built for this. To know if the work is landing, you need to periodically run your target queries directly against Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity and log what comes back — is your business mentioned, cited, or absent entirely, and has that changed over the last quarter.

What This Will Not Do

Being direct about limits: no agency can guarantee a specific citation from ChatGPT or a placement in a specific AI Overview — these engines change constantly and do not publish their selection logic. What good AEO/GEO work does is materially improve the odds by removing the structural reasons your content gets skipped. Anyone promising a guaranteed citation is not being straight with you.

The Bottom Line

Ranking on Google’s traditional results and getting cited by AI engines increasingly require different formatting decisions on the same content. The businesses winning this in 2026 are answering questions directly, backing claims with specifics, and building consistent authority signals across the web — not chasing keyword tricks that stopped working years ago.
